DescriptionThe Antbear Guesthouse is a thatched, whitewashed cottage built high on a natural platform overlooking the Bushmans River and Giants Castle. This cottage is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 10 guests at a time. It’s a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste. The name “Antbear” comes from its previous resident who lived under the floorboards before its restoration just a few years ago. It’s filled with gorgeous hand crafted furniture, wonderful wooden sculptures and a seemingly never ending collection of artistic aspects to discover. Plan for slow and decadent dinners by candlelight prepared by your hosts Andrew and Conny. Sometimes it’s a Moroccan spread including a genuine Moroccan tagine prepared on wood coals or maybe it’s a surprise of just how delightful Chinese food can be. Breakfast is served with freshly baked bread and scones and often it becomes a 2 hour affair. There is plenty to do in the area too. After a couple of wrong turns we managed to get straightened out. One turn took us to a dead end at a big knob called Die Kop. It was quite scenic. We enjoyed the scenery along the route, thank you. We would certainly recommend Antbear to friends but the best testament you can have I suppose is that yours was the only establishment full in an out of season period - so there you go you are doing things right! The situation is dramatic, poised on a hillside overlooking a large valley and cliffs, and away in the distance the Giant's Castle. We took your recommended route through Greytown, Dundee and Vryheid to the Tembe Elephant reserve. Fantastic. We have to say that we have been stunned by your country and we are so glad that we opted for car travel and that the routes that we decided to take, much against the wishes of the rest of the party who flew to Durban and then stuck to motorways. In doing so they missed a really interesting trip through Zulu land. We would love to return and do the battlefields but probably would find it difficult to get past the Drakensberg, those stupendous mountains. We both cannot thank you enough for making us so welcome. We will not easily forget your amazing site with those unbelievable views and your ready friendship. DirectionsTravel along the N3. Take the off ramp 152 between Estcourt and Mooi River. Travel in the direction of Hidcote. After 7 km you will encounter a T-junction. Turn right towards Giants Castle. After 14 km turn right towards Moor Park onto a dirt road. After 5.3 Km you will pass a right hand turn off called "The Rise". 300 meters passed this road is the farm entrance on the right. The Antbear Guesthouse is 2km along the farm road up the hill and is the thatched cottages that you can see from the road. |
